IMPORTANT STERILIZATION NOTES FOR DOGS AND CATS

What is Sterilization for pets?

Sterilization is a surgical procedure in which a part of your pet's reproductive organ (ovaries in females or testes in males) is removed to permanently stop it from reproducing.

Benefits of sterilization

  • Sterilization prevents unwanted breeding in dogs and cats, allowing owners to care for them better while reducing the number of stray pets that impact the shared environment.

  • When pets reach sexual maturity, they may exhibit behaviors like marking territory, which can be quite troublesome for owners. Sterilization can help curb these undesirable behaviors and prevent them from roaming in search of a mate.

  • Additionally, sterilization can increase a pet's lifespan, reduce the risk of cancer and serious infections, and save owners money on veterinary care.

Appropriate Timing for Sterilization

  • For dogs, it is recommended to spay or neuter between 6 to 9 months of age; after this period, it may become more challenging.

  • For cats, it is advisable to spay or neuter before their first heat cycle, around 6 months of age.

Pre-Surgery Considerations

  • Avoid sterilizing pets that are in heat or pregnant.

  • Choose a reputable, high-quality veterinary clinic.

  • Conduct necessary pre-surgical tests to ensure your pet's health throughout the procedure.

  • Deworm, fully vaccinate, and ensure pets fast for 6-8 hours prior to surgery.

Post-Surgery Considerations

  • Only take your pet home once they are awake from anesthesia.

  • Place them in a quiet area, keep the incision clean, and monitor them closely for the first 24 hours.

  • Take your pet to the vet immediately if you notice any unusual signs, such as bleeding, open stitches, or vomiting.

  • A few hours after the surgery, pets may show signs like stumbling, unsteady walking, glazed eyes, and a face that appears not fully alert. These are normal reactions to anesthesia and should not cause concern; they will typically become fully awake within 6-8 hours.

  • Do not feed your pet immediately after the surgery. Only offer soft, easily digestible food when they show interest on the first day after the procedure.

  • Maintain cleanliness around the incision site. Prevent your pet from going outside, on dirt, sand, or in damp, unsanitary places to avoid infection. Change the bandage regularly for female pets' incisions.

  • Take your dog or cat back to the vet for a follow-up appointment as advised by the doctor.
