LET'S READ CATS’ BODY LANGUAGE WITH HI RAW!

Cats rank among the most cherished pets globally, and their allure is undeniable. Each cat possesses its own distinctive personality, and grasping their body language and everyday actions can transform you into a true "cat expert."

In reality, cats have their own ways of communication, they can convey their feelings quite clearly if you pay attention to the cues from their petite, fluffy bodies! In this article, Hi Raw! will explore the intriguing behaviors of cats, providing you with insights into their emotions and overall state

Happy & Relaxed

A happy and relaxed cat typically shows independent and calm behaviors. Their movements are gentle and fluid, with their head held steady instead of constantly scanning the surroundings. You’ll often see a cheerful cat lying down or sitting comfortably.

  • Ears: Upright and in a neutral position, capable of swiveling to pick up surrounding sounds.

  • Eyes: Almond-shaped pupils with a silver slit, blinking slowly in a relaxed manner.

  • Body: Loose and flexible. When a cat lies on its side or rolls onto its back, showing its tummy, it signals that it feels safe and at ease.

  • Tail: An upright tail, sometimes curved at the tip, this is usually a greeting and means they are happy to see you.

Focused and Active

A cat that is focused and ready to play may appear quite different from a relaxed cat, as it exhibits a hunting posture while playing. The cat's pupils may dilate, and its tail may sway from side to side, indicating interest in its prey (or in the case of house cats, its toys). When playing, you will often see the cat stalking, chasing, jumping, and pouncing on its toys.

  • Ears: Erect and facing forward.

  • Eyes: Dilated pupils, giving the cat a very alert appearance.

  • Body: The cat will show stalking behaviors towards its prey or toys, typically crouching low with its head elevated. It might wiggle amusingly, often shaking its hindquarters in preparation for a pounce with its back legs.

  • Tail: Some cats may lift their tails before pouncing, while others will flick or sway their tails around.

Expressing Affection

When cats want to show affection, they often rub against you or run around you, usually in an eight-shaped pattern. Lowering their head and rubbing their chin against you are clear signs that a cat loves you, as they are transferring their scent from their cheeks to your body. When a cat marks you with its scent, it means they are asserting ownership or considering you as theirs.

  • Ears: Upright and in a neutral position.

  • Eyes: Almond-shaped pupils with a silver slit.

  • Body: Arched back. When your cat wants to be petted or is in a loving mood, it will nuzzle its cheek and body against you. They may also purr when being stroked, which is a clear indication that they enjoy the affection.

  • Tail: The cat's tail may sway from side to side.

Angry, Threatened or Anxious

A cat that feels fearful or angry will show distinct signs that are quite different from those of a happy or relaxed cat. Their ears may be flattened back or lying flat against their head, resembling airplane ears. The pupils can dilate, indicating that they are very alert and on guard.

In a state of fear or aggression, cats will extend their claws and arch their back to make themselves look bigger and more intimidating

  • Ears: If your cat is stressed, their ears might be flat against their head.

  • Eyes: The cats' eyes and pupils will be wide.

  • Body: Fur bristled, with the cat either arching its back or crouching low.

  • Tail: Fluffed up and twitching rapidly, or tucked down against the body.

In addition to their adorable purring and meowing, cats often express their emotions or moods through body language! A cat's feelings are conveyed through their daily behaviors, so if you observe and spend enough time with them, you'll come to understand how to communicate effectively with your feline friends.
