PREVENTING COMMON DOG DISEASES DURING RAINY SEASON

PREVENTING COMMON DOG DISEASES DURING RAINY SEASON

13.07.2024

The rainy season, with its humid and cold weather, creates an ideal environment for bacteria and parasites to thrive, making it easy for dogs to get sick. Pawrents should pay attention to preventive measures to ensure their furry friends have strong immunity and stay healthy during the rainy season.

Dermatitis/Skin Inflammation

Skin inflammation is one of the most common diseases that pets often suffer from. The initial symptoms are usually itching, hair loss, dermatitis, redness, blisters, as well as skin lesions on various parts of the body, namely the eyes, mouth, belly, elbows, and legs.

Prevention:

  • Bathe your dog properly using dog-safe soap and ensure their fur is completely dry after bathing.

  • Regularly inspect and clean your dog's living space.

  • Use flea and tick medication on your dog every two months.

  • Isolate and treat any dogs showing signs of skin inflammation to prevent transmission to other pets.

Respiratory Diseases

Dogs can develop respiratory infections caused by viruses or bacteria that already exist in the respiratory system, especially when the animal is weak. Older dogs, puppies, and dogs living in polluted environments are more prone to contracting these illnesses.

In addition, these diseases can also be triggered by changes in weather. This can cause dogs to catch colds, bronchial damage, and eventually pneumonia.

Prevention:

  • Maintain a clean and healthy living environment for your dog: Ensure their living area is always clean, warm in the winter, and dry and airy in the summer.

  • Provide proper care and nutrition: Nourish your dog with a high-quality diet and deworm them regularly to maintain their overall health.

  • Keep your dog's vaccinations up to date: Regular vaccinations can help protect your dog from various infectious diseases, including respiratory illnesses.

  • Be attentive to signs of respiratory infections: Early detection is crucial for prompt treatment and a better chance of full recovery. Common signs to watch for include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing.

  • Supplement with essential vitamins: Consider adding vitamin C, vitamin B, and B-complex supplements to your dog's diet to support their immune system.

  • Protect your dog from extreme weather conditions: Avoid exposing your dog to windy or cold environments, as these can worsen respiratory symptoms.

Fungal Skin Infections

Fungal skin infections, also known as dermatomycosis, are common in dogs and are caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, including Microsporum canis (which affects cats, dogs, and to a lesser extent, larger animals), Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T verrucosum, T erinacei, and M gypseum (which cause inflammatory lesions). These fungi can infect the skin, hair, or nails of dogs, leading to a variety of symptoms.

These fungal hyphae invade and destroy the hair follicles and pores of dogs, causing fungal infections, dandruff, and hair loss. This disease can affect both dogs and cats. In young or debilitated animals, fungal infections can be persistent and widespread. Transmission can occur directly from an infected dog to a healthy one, or indirectly through shedding of infected hairs.

Prevention:

  • Isolate infected dogs: Keep dogs with signs of a fungal infection separate from other pets to prevent transmission and enable more effective treatment.

  • Regular veterinary checkups: Schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian to monitor your dog's health and detect any signs of infection early on.

  • Parasite prevention: Regularly administer anti-parasitic medications (e.g., against ticks, fleas) to dogs on a scheduled basis.

  • Grooming: Groom your dog regularly to remove loose hair and debris, which can harbor fungi.

Summary

Taking care of dogs during the rainy season requires special attention from the pawrents. Ensuring that our dogs have a dry, clean, and warm living environment, along with a nutritious diet and regular health checkups, can help minimize the risk of common diseases during this season. Implementing preventive measures will help keep your dog healthy and safe throughout the rainy season.
