Dogs and cats, despite having their own eating preferences, are sometimes attracted to delicious foods and treats namely candy, dried fruits, and many other foods. However, unfortunately, there are certain foods that dogs and cats cannot eat. If they come into contact with these foods, it can cause dangerous illnesses and poisoning that threaten their lives. Here is a list of the top 5 foods that you should avoid feeding your pets:
Grapes and raisins
Official studies have not yet been able to determine the specific substances in grapes that are toxic to pets, especially dogs. Nevertheless, some studies suggest that dogs cannot metabolize certain compounds found in grapes, such as tannins, flavonoids, and monosaccharides, leading to poisoning.
Garlic, Onions
Garlic contains compounds called disulfides and thiosulfates, which can be toxic to cats and dogs as they can cause conditions like hemolytic anemia, Heinz body anemia, and methemoglobinemia. All of these conditions can damage the red blood cells of your pets.
Chocolate
While chocolate is a favorite food for humans, it is harmful to pets because it contains theobromine and caffeine. These two substances can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even death in dogs and cats.
Coffee
Caffeine increases blood pressure and can cause cardiac arrhythmias in pets, leading to muscle tremors, shaking, or seizures. Caffeine also affects the gastrointestinal tract, causing vomiting and diarrhea.
Alcohol
Pets cannot metabolize alcohol, so any alcoholic beverages, foods, or products containing alcohol can cause poisoning in pets. Alcohol can also lead to fatigue, respiratory depression, and dangerously low body temperature in dogs.
Please note that it is always best to consult with a veterinarian regarding your pet's diet and any potential risks associated with certain foods.
